Showers and flowers

It's my turn to set the challenge at Daring Cardmakers this week. As it seems to have been raining for weeks here in the UK and the garden is really getting going for summer I thought we’d focus on showers and/or flowers — bonus brownie points if your card features both!

I made a loose watercolour swoosh in blue and then splattered paint for my shower. The die cut flowers (liberated from their bottle by snipping with scissors) are watercoloured too, I did the little pieces separately and then inlaid them once they were dry. It’s a bit fiddly but quite a nice effect, I think.

A simple stamped sentiment and my usual rounded corner and call it good to go.

Supplies:
Bouquet die (Concord and 9th)
Watercolours (Winsor & Newton)
Sentiment from Say It All (Hero Arts, retired)
Versafine by Tsukineko (Onyx Black)
Corner Chomper

Elements for May

It's my turn to set the challenge at Daring Cardmakers and as it’s the first Friday of the month it is, as always, an “elemental” challenge — just chose at least three elements from the inspiration picture to kick start your project.

I chose teal tones (although it looks more blue toned on the photo), the daisy from the packaging, knitted stitch pattern and circles (inspired by the buttons and the circle on the box).

I started by smooshing ink onto the card with a piece of acetate then when it was dry I added circles using a couple of lids as stamps. I have an embossing folder with a nice knit pattern but I didn’t want to emboss the card so I embossed a piece of fun foam and used it as a texture stamp. The die cut daisy has a bit of watercolour added and the head is raised with some scraps of card.

Supplies:
Wildflower Stems 1 dies (Tim Holtz/Sizzix)
Adirondack dye ink by Ranger (Stream)
Versafine by Tsukineko (Onyx Black)
Sentiment from Putting in the Ritz (Waltzingmouse Stamps, no longer with us)
Watercolours by Winsor & Newton
Knitted 3D embossing folder (Sizzix)

Elements for March

First Friday of the month is always an "elemental" challenge at Daring Cardmakers — choose at least three elements from the inspiration picture to kickstart your project.

This month's picture has a very serene quality. I decided that leant itself to sympathy cards and since they're rarely in my stash and you inevitably don't really feel like making one when you need it, I went that way.

From the inspiration picture I chose some of the colours, the feathers from the dream catchers, the macrame made me think of this embossing folder and I used twine to tie the feathers together. The feathers are gently edged with Vintage Photo ink.

Stamps:
Big Day Today (Waltzingmouse Stamps, no longer with us)

Paper:
Bristol board
Kraft

Ink:
Brilliance by Tsukineko (Pearlescent Chocolate)
Tim Holtz Distress ink by Ranger (Vintage Photo)

Other:
Feathers
Linked circles
Nail art pearls
Crochet thread
Cropadile

Here's our inspiration this week:

Elements for August

It's my turn to set the challenge at Daring Cardmakers this week. As it’s the first Friday of the month, that means an “elemental” challenge — just choose at least three things from the inspiration picture to kick start your project

I thought it might be fun to revisit the first ever August Elements picture. It turned out to be a very eclectic mix of stuff with lots of scope.

I chose the deer head, woodgrain, white text on black and a little pop of green and red and made a Christmas card. I die cut all the parts for the deer from white card, coloured most with Distress ink and just the antlers and inside the ears with Copics (also used for foliage and berries). I used a pearl pen for his eyes to give them a bit of sheen and put some Glossy Accents on the berries for the same reason

Stamps:
Merriest Christmas Wishes (Hero Arts, retired)

Paper:
Bristol board
Black

Ink:
Tim Holtz Distress ink by Ranger (Antique Linen, Tea Dye, Vintage Photo)
Brilliance by Tsukineko (Graphite Black)

Other:
Cool Yule dies (Tim Holtz/Sizzix)
Festive Greenery strip die (Tim Holtz/Sizzix)
Pinewood Planks embossing folder (Stampin Up!)
Copic markers
Glossy Accents
Pearl pen by Viva Decor (Anthracite)
Bright white detail embossing powder by Wow!

Make it masculine

Dawn is setting our challenge at Daring Cardmakers this week and she’d like to see some more masculine makes.

The Tim Holtz lumber folder makes a good base for a masculine card, I think. I cut an extra “plank” to extend it for the proportions of the card. As there’s a join between each plank in any case, it’s not too difficult to make it look fairly seamless.

I rubbed a Neocolour water soluble crayon over the embossing (keeping it on the folder so it has support underneath is a good idea) and then smudged with a damp finger.

Simple white die cut foliage tied with a tomato paste dot and a scripty sentiment finish it off.

Supplies:
Tim Holtz/Sizzix embossing folder (Lumber)
Tim Holtz/Sizzix Wildflower dies
Poppystamps die (Happy Birthday Poe Script)
Neocolour crayons
Bristol board
Kraft card
Brown fineliner
Tomato past tube

Birds of a feather

Nat is setting our challenge over at Daring Cardmakers this week — she’d like to see feathers or something feathered.

Birds are probably second only to florals in my stamp collection so that seemed to be the way to go. I decided to play along at A Blog Named Hero as well and use the HA colour layering stamp for my bird, making her a restful combination of blues. As April is their blog birthday month, HA want to see birthday cards this time.

Going white on white for the sentiment seemed right for a light and airy feel. The lovely die was gifted to me — thanks Margot! — and gives a beautifully crisp cut.

Stamps:
Bird and branch colour layering (Hero Arts)

Paper:
Bristol board

Ink:
Brilliance by Tsukineko (Graphite Black, Pearlescent Chocolate)
Tim Holtz Distress ink by Ranger (Tumbled Glass, Salty Ocean, Blueprint Sketch, Twisted Citron)

Elements for April

Dawn is setting our first challenge of the month over at Daring Cardmakers — as ever with our “elemental” challenges, just choose at least three elements from the inspiration picture to include in your project.

I chose a hedgehog, spotty toadstools, colours, woodgrain and leaves. I haven’t used pencils on kraft for ages, it was nice to revisit that and I’ve always thought the combination of balloons and hedgehogs has a delightful optimism about it! I got this set ages ago from someone who was clearing out and haven’t got round to using it until now. I don’t think this stamp has ever been off the backing sheet, I had a real struggle to peel it off without damaging it. Got there in the end and hopefully it will be a bit easier next time.

Here in the UK hedgehogs will be coming out of hibernation around now, if you have local ones you could make sure they have access to drinking water (put out a shallow dish) even if you don’t want to risk attracting other critters by putting food out. If you do want to put food out, apparently the best choice is a meaty (as opposed to fishy) cat food or kitten biscuits — no matter what we were told as kids don’t be tempted to put out bread and milk as hedgehogs are lactose intolerant!

Stamps:
Critter Party (Penny Black Transparent)
Spring Trees (Cornish Heritage Farms, no longer with us)

Paper:
Bristol board
Kraft

Ink:
Brilliance by Tsukineko (Graphite Black)

Other:
Coloured pencils
Stitched rectangle dies A6 size (Paper Rose)
Phrases I dies (Spellbinder)
Festive Rose dies (Sue Wilson/Creative Expressions)
Pinewood Planks embossing folder (Stampin’ Up)

Little ones

Miri is setting our challenge today at Daring Cardmakers with the theme of “little ones” — make a card for the little ones in your life or think small in other ways!

I’m also playing along with Stay Crafty with a Blog Named Hero — this month’s theme is “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. I really got the Beach Please set for the umbrella image so of course the first thing I use is the cocktail glass! I don’t often get matching dies for stamps but I’m glad I had them here — these little glasses would have been a horror to fussy cut and the option to cut them out and pop them up is great.

I’ve gone for the slightly lateral interpretation at DCM as I don’t have any babies or small children to make for. I lined up some little cocktails in rainbow colours, courtesy of Distress inks, for a clean and simple card. The glasses are stuck on with gel glue for a bit of lift and there’s Wink of Stella on the ice cubes, only obvious if you catch the light just right!

Stamps:
Beach Please Stamp & Cut (Hero Arts)
Big Day Today (Waltzingmouse Stamps, no longer with us)

Paper:
Bristol board
Black

Ink:
Brilliance by Tsukineko (Graphite Black)
Tim Holtz Distress ink by Ranger (Barn Door, Spiced Marmalade, Mustard Seed, Blueprint Sketch, Mowed Lawn, Wilted Violet, Weathered Wood, Black Soot)

Other:
Clear Wink of Stella pen

All loved up

As Valentine’s Day is almost upon us, Dawn has set us a challenge with the theme of "all loved up" at Daring Cardmakers this week.

I’ve gone for hearts and made a fairly masculine card. I’ve also tied in with a couple of other challenges — Lost Coast Designs where the theme is love and hearts along with stamping and Die Cut Divas who would like to see some gold along with using your die cutter.

I was lucky enough to have my name come out of the LCD challenge hat recently and chose the fabulous Perspective Floor stamp as part of my prize. Of course, being me the first thing I did was something other than use it as a floor! I’ve stamped in a vertical orientation, turned and matched up the pattern (there’s actually a stamp in the LCD catalogue that would do the job for you — it’s called Fourth Dimension — but I’m never one for making things easy for myself, am I?!).

I haven’t used these primitive hearts for ages so it was nice to revisit those. The design sort of evolved a bit, I messed up what I originally planned for the smaller heart and then remembered the Die Cut Divas challenge and covered it all up with gold leafing! I used a two way glue pen and deliberately tried to introduce some texture. It's very shiny and reflective and difficult to photograph!

Stamps:
Perspective Floor  (Lost Coast Designs)
Everyday Petites (Cornish Heritage Farms, no longer with us)

Paper:
Bristol board

Ink:
Versafine by Tsukineko (Onyx Black)
Tim Holtz Distress ink by Ranger (Barn Door, Fired Brick)

Other:
Mega Flake by Indigo Blu (Chariot of Fire)
Zig two way glue pen
Primitive Hearts Bigz die (Sizzix)
Stitched rectangles dies A6 size (Paper Rose)

Shine on

It’s Friday so it must be time for a new challenge at Daring Cardmakers. Our one word prompt in the run up to Christmas this week is: SHINE.

I got this die set a while ago on a well known auction site from someone having a crafty clear out. I should really be doing the same rather than buying more stuff! As soon as I saw this week’s word I knew I wanted to give the bulbs their first outing.

I cut the base layer from silver mirri card and then the top layer is vellum for a frosted bulb kind of look. I used double sided tape sheet on the vellum to get round the "show through" problem. The central portion is inked after masking the edges and then splattered with water. The sentiment is embossed with white powder.

As I've gone far more die cut oriented than usual, I feel justified in another entry to this month's Die Cut Divas challenge!

Stamps:
Sparkle All the Way (Crafter’s Companion)

Paper:
Bristol board
Silver mirri
Vellum

Ink:
Versamark by Tsukineko
Tim Holtz Distress ink (Dusty Concord) and Oxide (Wilted Violet) by Ranger

Other:
String of Lights dies (Lawn Fawn)
Bright white detail embossing powder (Wow)
Gel glue (Pinflair)
Double sided tape sheet

Autumn leaves

Time for a new challenge at Let's Squash It  and I’m delighted to be joining Jo and Gail as Guest Designer again this month.

The theme this time is trees and/or leaves. I did a bit of both with trees on the embossing folder and die cut leaves for good measure. This little chap had a wintery adventure at this woodland spot last year, padding through snow between the trees — I thought it might be fun to give him some crunchy autumn foliage to kick up this year! I inked a piece of card with a few Distress inks then die cut the leaves to put under his feet.

Stamps:
Pointy Hat Gnome (Lost Coast Designs)
Sentiment from Essential Messages (Hero Arts, retired)

Paper:
Bristol board

Ink:
Brilliance by Tsukineko (Graphite Black, Pearlescent Chocolate)
Tim Holtz Distress ink by Ranger (Mustard Seed, Rusty Hinge, Spiced Marmalade)

Other:
Woodland embossing folder (Stampin’ Up!)
Leaves dies (Impression Obsession)
Stitched rectangle dies, A6 size (Paper Rose)
Fineline marker
Copic markers
Gel glue

Why not break out an embossing folder and something with trees or leaves and come join the fun, there’s always a little prize on offer for a randomly chosen winner at Let’s Squash It and it’s always a lovely bunch of crafters taking part!

Oh, and with his drift of autumn leaves and backdrop of tree trunks, Gnomie thought he should enter the Four Seasons October challenge, too!

October elements

Shabneez has chosen our mood board for October's "elemental" challenge at Daring Cardmakers this week. As ever, just choose at least three elements to kickstart your card.

I chose the brick wall, a skinny circle (inspired by the rims of the things bottom right — I think they’re aerosol cans but I’m not 100% sure!) and some leaves.

I decided to combine with a couple of other challenges too. The current Die Cut Divas theme is watercolour — I did the bricks by colouring an embossing folder with a couple of Momento markers and pressing a piece of watercolour paper onto it. I got a better impression on the test piece I did — typical! It still gave me a starting point, with a brush and a mixture of Distress inks and watercolour paints I ended up with a reasonable wall. I also watercoloured the die cut leaves.

An old friend from the days of Crafty Secrets being a sponsor company at Splitcoast is co-running a challenge based on the Four Seasons — I thought this fit the bill for autumn so I’m linking up for the October challenge there too.

Supplies:
Watercolor paper
Brickwork embossing folder (Tim Holtz/Sizzix)
Momento markers
Winsor & Newton watercolour paints
Stitched rectangle dies, A6 size (Paper Rose)
Leaves dies (Impression Obsession)
Fine Frames dies (Altenew)
Sentiment from Big Day Today (Waltzingmouse Stamps, no longer with us)
Brilliance by Tsukineko (Pearlescent Chocolate)
Tim Holtz Distress ink by Ranger (Tumbled Glass, Rusty Hinge)

Changing seasons

Our challenge at Daring Cardmakers this week is being set by Dawn and she’d like to see something influenced by the changing seasons.

I’ve opted for the obvious autumnal feel and also combined with the current challenges at Let’s Squash It (emboss two thirds of your card) and Die Cut Divas (autumn).

On my daily walk up the lane I pass lots of interesting dry stone walling, some of it a little tumbledown, some of it mossy or supporting brambles as well as keeping the cows and sheep where they should be! I haven’t used this folder for ages and I thought it would be nicely rustic with the autumn leaves. I added a bit of ink to the folder before embossing to accentuate the lines.

Unusually for me, there’s no stamping (other than the sentiment).

Stamps:
Sentiment from Big Day Today (Waltzingmouse Stamps, no longer with us)

Paper:
Bristol board

Ink:
Versafine by Tsukineko (Vintage Sepia)
Tim Holtz Distress ink by Ranger (Vintage Photo)

September elements and link in the chain

A two-in-one post today since the second of the month (reveal day at Card Chain Challenge) coincides with the first Friday (our “elemental” challenge at Daring Cardmakers).

Miri has chosen our DCM mood board for September — as ever, just chose at least three elements to kickstart your project. I chose the surface rings on the puddle, the autumn leaves and a circle. I used Pan Pastels to colour the die cut leaves and added the framing for the circle as an afterthought so it’s drawn on with a fineliner and a Copic marker. The dots are my trusty tomato paste tube and a few tiny nail art gems.

Just realised Die Cut Divas have an autumn theme this time around so I’m linking this card up there, too.

Stamps:
Sentiment from Say It All (Hero Arts, retired)

Paper:
Bristol board

Ink:
Versafine by Tsukineko (Vintage Sepia)

Other:
Retro circles embossing folder  (Tim Holtz/Sizzix)
Pan pastels
Circles dies (Spellbinder)
Leaves dies (Impression Obsession)
Stitched rectangles A6 size (Paper Rose)
Tomato paste tube
Nail art gems

My Card Chain Challenge card went to Pat in Texas this time. From the options on offer I chose the theme of fruit and flowers and gave this lovely lemon set its first outing (I have blogged another card with it already but this one was made and sent before that was made). It’s almost my usual one layer card for CCC, just the little blossom is die cut and added over the base layer.

There’s still time to sign up for the September chain if you fancy it, details here.

Stamps:
Lemon Blossom (The Greetery, plus matching dies)

Paper:
Bristol board

Ink:
Brilliance by Tsukineko (Pearlescent Chocolate)
Various yellow, green and pink inks (I failed to keep note!)

Cool citrus

Kathy is setting our challenge at Daring Cardmakers this week — it's hot again here in the UK so she'd like to see ways to keep your cool. Check out the blog for ideas from the team!

I'm partial to a citron pressé when on holiday somewhere hot so I decided to go that way —there's something cool and refreshing about sharp citrus flavours mixed with gently fizzy water and a spoonful of sugar. A couple of ice cubes and a sprig of mint make it more sophisticated if you’re that way inclined!

This pretty layering stamp set from The Greetery was on my wish list and hubby bought it for me as a gift now there’s a UK stockist (Seven Hills, if anyone needs to know!). He bought the coordinating dies too (which I confess I probably wouldn’t have done) so I played with both here. The dies definitely made the flower cluster easier!

The shaped card was inspired by the current challenge at Let's Squash It who want us to combine our embossing folders with a card that isn’t square or rectangular. I haven’t used this cabinet card die for ages and thought it might make an attractive frame for an arrangement of lemons. I chose a basketweave folder to be reminiscent of picnic baskets or perhaps shady sun hats! I ran a gold paint pen around the inside of the frame for a bit of definition. Because it’s a steel rule die it’s really easy to cut through a couple of layers — just fold the base then position the fold fractionally inside the left hand cutting edge so it stays intact and you’ll have a perfectly shaped card base.

The Die Cut Divas have a shaped card challenge too so I’m linking up there as well!

Stamps:
Lemon Blossom (plus coordinating dies) (The Greetery)

Paper:
Bristol board

Ink:
Tim Holtz Distress by Ranger (Mowed Lawn, Picked Raspberry)
Tim Holtz Distress Oxide by Ranger (Twisted Citron)
Versacraft by Tsukineko (Lemon Yellow)

August's elements

Nat has chosen the mood board for our "elemental" challenge at Daring Cardmakers this week — as ever, just chose at least three elements to feature on your card.

I chose the woodgrain, yellow flower and striped ring. I cut an extra flower head and layered it behind the main die cut, slightly offset, and curved the petals on the front one for a bit more dimension.

Retro Rubber has an “anything goes” theme for the current challenge so I’m linking up there too. My woodgrain stamp has been well loved since being added to my stash around 2008!

Link in the chain - July

It's reveal day at Card Chain Challenge — mine has travelled the short distance to Kath this time.

From the options on offer I only managed the theme of birds but it only takes one to play! I did manage to make my birds summery though as a nod to the season.

Hopefully these gulls are not gearing up to swipe the chips or Cornish pasty of the holiday-makers who are undoubtedly sitting just out of the frame. I considered giving them some soft colour with chalks but in the end decided I liked the crisp contrast of the white gulls and frame with the colourful waves and beach.

The waves are a lovely layering stamp set, you can change the look quite drastically with different ink choices. I coloured the beach area with a couple of watercolour paints, dotted a little white pen for breaking foam and stamped the greeting with sandy colours for that stick-written look!

Stamps:
Layering Waves (Hero Arts)

Paper:
Bristol board

Ink:
Versacraft (Pale Aqua)
Adirondack dye ink by Ranger (Sandal, Stream)
Tim Holtz Distress ink by Ranger (Salty Ocean)

Life's a beach

Miri is setting our challenge at Daring Cardmakers this week — Life's a beach. Sea, sand, flip flops, surf boards, palm trees or a bucket and spade — what do you associate with the beach?

I made a masculine card with one of my all-time favourite stamp sets, some card that made me think of sand and a die cut net.

The shells have the tiniest touch of sparkle, courtesy of Spica glitter pen.

Celebrate

We're celebrating at Daring Cardmakers this week - create a card for any occasion and include the word "celebrate" in your make.

I've combined with the current challenge at Let's Squash It which wants geometric or repeating patterns in our embossing.

I embossed a piece of engraving board (scraperboard when I was a kid!) in an old Spellbinders folder then sanded away the black coating to reveal the copper foil. Some white die cut flowers, a heat embossed sentiment and a little dome made from tomato paste tube metal and call it done.

Supplies:
Bristol board
Birthday (Letter It stamp range by Ranger)
So Trendy (Mbossibilities by Spellbinder)
Wildflower Stems I (Tim Holtz/Sizzix)
Copper engraving board
Versmark by Tsukineko
Detail embossing powder (copper)

The last link of 2021!

It’s time for the reveal of the last Card Chain Challenge of 2021 — Gail and Jo followed the pattern they set last year by giving us a tic-tac-toe board to play with for December but a five by five one this time (so no way was I even thinking about trying for a full house!)

My card went to the lovely Jo and I played with the right-most vertical line of the board — white, merry, Santa, circle, red. I figured Santa’s hat would be enough of an indication that “Santa woz ’ere”. I somehow got it into my head that I was supposed to have silver as an element as well but that was actually on a completely different line. Never mind, it made the circles nice and festive!

The hat is stamped, coloured and cut out, sentiment and circles are die cut and there’s a doodled frame to finish it all off.
