Two in one

I've combined two challenges here: the DCM 'Start from Scratch' challenge set by Tracie and the first of the challenges over at the Crafts by Carolyn 2007 Big Challenge (a card with a buckle or shrink plastic - I've actually done both!).



Tracie said no premade embellies allowed but I think ribbon probably counts as a basic - hope so anyway!

I made the buckle by wiping Brilliance Pearlescent Orchid over a piece of Shrink Plastic and then overstamping with flowers with a Rouge Cat's Eye Chalk Ink pad. Corners are rouned off with a corner punch and I cut the slits with a knife and ruler. The greeting is stamped with Brilliance Graphite Black (and I used alphabet stamps to make up the greeting so I even started from scratch there!).

The background for the card is the same flower stamp I used on the buckle stamped in the Brilliance Orchid ink on a pale pink card blank (the top part masked off so that stayed plain) and the buckle is mounted on pistachio green DCWV cardstock with rouge chalk ink swiped round the edges.

Dad's birthday

It was my dad's birthday a few days ago. I always find cards for him a bit difficult as he doesn't have any of the typical hobbies to theme stuff around (football, golf etc). He's very practical though so wood and metal make good elements on cards for him and I knew I wanted to use my CraftRobo in making it as Dad gave me the money to buy it (just on a whim - wasn't that lovely of him?).



Woodgrain paper for the background came from The Papermill - I cut 'planks' and inked the edges for some depth. Lettering is cut with the CraftRobo and I've stuck a couple of layers together to give it more body. They're painted with gold acrylic paint and then dabbed over with Caramel Delight and Chestnut Whispers inkpads for a coppery effect. A final touch of Violet and Azure gave more of a weathered look. I love the way copper changes with the effects of heat and age.

The tag is a BossKuts ribbon slide with one end cut off, 'aged' with some inking and a light sprinkle of embossing powder to grunge it up. Stamped/embossed greeting from the Woodware Tiny Phrases set. I raised the D with tiny foam pads and tied the tag around it with jute string.

Food, glorious food

It's Kathy's turn to set the dare over at DCM this week and she's asked for cards featuring food. As it happens I just discovered that a friend had an op yesterday and is expecting to be home tomorrow so I needed a 'hope you soon feel better' kind of card. A bunch of grapes seemed like a classic subject for that!

I found a photo of a grape vine (you wouldn't believe how many of those we have in our collection!) and traced a leaf in RoboMaster then cut out a load of little circles, a frame and a wiggly bit for a tendril. I cut them all from plain card and then dabbed inkpads over them - leaf in two shades of green and grapes in two shades of purple. I used an embossing tool to 'draw' the leaf veins. A few grapes are coated with clear embossing powder and the frame is painted with gold acrylic and has a few random gold sparkle EP highlights.

Didn't think I was going to get time to craft today but if a poorly friend needs a card then you just have a squeeze it in, don't you?

With wings on

By 'eck, where does the time go? I'm sooo behind with blogs and challenges and stuff - I promise I'll try to get around some of them later. Here's my very last minute DCM challenge card for Jane's dare. Jane wanted to see wings so here are mine...

Most of my friends would probably think of me as a words person rather than a visual one so I decided to play with the idea of uplifting words/ideas as feathers for my wings.

I've dabbed Chestnut Brown Whispers ink onto DCWV textured card stock and then fed it through my Dymo and sanded the surface. Dark background square is from a pack of handmade papers bought ages ago in The Works. The swirls were a bit 'bright white' for what I wanted so I've used a bit of blue and grey chalk to tone them down. Swirls on the card itself are freestyled with chalks and a pompom applicator.

I've just realised I haven't blogged my dad's birthday card and notebook. He's seen them now so I'll try to do that tomorrow.

New toys

I've never really got into rubber stamping. I often admire the style on other people's work but just not got into it myself. Well, I've decided to give it a whirl and on Sunday I won a bargain bundle of stamps on eBay to get me started. Postie delivered them this morning so here's my first attempt with one of my new toys.

There's a challenge on the Crafts by Carolyn forum to cut your stamped card somehow so this one has a section cut away at the top, where the black section stops. Main image is a Hampton Arts stamp and I just swirled a bit of chalk on there for the coloured bits. Stamped thank you on a handcut ribbon slide threaded onto orange grosgrain to finish it off.

It's a big stamp (that's a 5x7inch card) and I found it a bit tricky to get the image to stamp properly all the way out to the edge but since this one was only my second attempt I think I did OK. Any hints or tips greatfully received though!

Why didn't anybody warn me?

OK, why didn't anybody warn me that starting a blog is dangerous? I've been tagged already! Hmmm, thanks Sheila (maybe!)

1. I cannot crochet to save my life.
2. Most luscious takeout ever: sushi and sashimi in lacquerware containers delivered by a man on a moped to a house in Tokyo.

4. I still have the cuddly rabbit given to me by my Godmother on the day I was born. He sleeps under my pillow.
5. As a proofreader, I've had to fight hard not to change all those 7s in the rules of this game into sevens (numbers below 10 are words!).
6. I hate making appointments to get my hair cut. I usually just go in get it done on the spot.
7. I read a lot. Probably more than is good for me! Current reading: Black Swan Green by David Mitchell.

Second time felt

Felt two blog posts running, huh? And this is second time for another reason, too.

Thanks to the Daring Cardmaker's current dare (see last post) I found Betz White's lovely blog. Betz does fabulous things with old sweaters and she's provided a great tutorial for making a felt flower. So it's second time around for a couple of sweaters I happend to have felted up for another project I haven't got round to doing yet - I used a little of them to have a go myself:

It's not as lush as Betz's but it's not bad for a first try, I don't think! I think I might stitch a central vein down the leaves if I get chance later on though.

Funky or Fuzzy? Does it depend on age?!

Firstly, many thanks to everyone who has visited my infant blog and left me nice comments - it's much appreciated.

This week's DCM dare is set by Gillian and she's challenged us all to make a card featuring felt. To me, felt has a very homely quality so I've gone for a homespun look...

The scrap of gingham fabric is mounted on red laid paper and the felt squares are blanket stitched on with embroidery thread. I made the folk heart 'buttons' by punching the shapes out of wood veneer and making holes with an eyelet punch. A piece of stitched grosgrain ribbon and a smaller wood veneer heart finish it off.

P.S. - playing with Fuzzy Felt sets was very popular when I was a kid, hence the title of this post. It's still available and their web site has a fascinating bit about the history behind the idea.

Mum's birthday

It was my mum's birthday yesterday and of course, I just couldn't make a card I liked. I toyed with lots of designs based around the word Mum but nothing came out right. In the end, I settled for something fairly 'vanilla'!



Layers of torn tissue paper with a bit of chalk ink added to the narrowest one for some extra definition, Gillian-inspired machine stitching, a big daisy and a stamped greeting (from the Woodware tiny greetings acrylic stamp set). Mum seemed to like it! (and was especially taken with the stitching - thanks Gillian!).

The daisy is my own design, cut on the CraftRobo. I've curved the petals over a pencil to give them a bit of dimension. If you have a cutter that will cut gsd files, you can grab the template for this one from the Scrapstars site (this thread) if you want it.

Crossing Continents!

The Daring Cardmakers dare is set by Saffa this week. She's challenged us all to make a card to celebrate a festival from a culture other than our own.

I grew up in an area that was about as mono-cultural as it's possible to get but we had a headmaster at junior school who definitely passed for progressive back in that day and age! I've had a soft spot for the festival of Diwali ever since he cast me as the Storyteller for the morning assembly where we learned about the fesitval of light (hey - I was cast as Jesus too but that's another story!).

So, despite the fact several darers have already made some fabulous Diwali cards, here's my take on it

I wanted to use light as part of the card itself so I've cut the word LIGHT out of white textured card and put silver refelctive card behind the word. I layered white card onto silver for the strip at the side and made flowers out of drop-shaped gems (they came in a Secret Santa package - thanks Santa!) with tiny pink gems as centres for a bit of colour. I used a clear glaze pen to write Celebrate directly onto the card and finished off with a twinkly star. An absolute pain to photograph but hopefully you get the idea!

I had a go at something for a completely different occasion before this one but I wasn't that happy with it so I'm still deciding whether to pop it on here or not!
